Here's a wacky idea...
Why not have Ranma get cursed _after_ he leaves to make his fortune?  The
dread pirate Roberta returns from an overseas trip to China, where Ranma had
fallen into a spring trying to bury some treasure..

Is that too much?

It's still funny if you left it alone.
