That's what I was getting at. It doesn't seem ... right. And it just
leaves the reader going "What the smeg is going on?!?" ... and unless
that was what the story was MEANT to do, then the REAL point of the
story is useless.

Agreed and well said.  Characters in a fanfic, old and new alike, must
fit into the universe upon which the fanfic is based (there are a very
few exceptions, and these fall into the categories of crossover and parody
for the most part). With existing characters, you have the additional
restriction of keeping them 'in character', but even a new character must
account for the effects of their environment.
