Ilsa asked:
I feel kinda silly for asking but could anybody
please tell me the difference between the
Robotech series and the Macross series?
Are they based on the same stories,
continuation of one another or totally
different?
There were 3 anime series in Japan, Superdimensional Fortress Macross
(1982), Genesis Climber Mospeada (1983), and Super Dimension Cavalry
Southern Cross (1984). They had absolutely nothing to do with each other
(except, maybe, for the production house, as I'm not sure what that was for
each).
In the 1985/86 timeframe, Carl Macek/HArmony Gold bought the rights to
Macross, realized it wasn't long enough for American TV (32 eps), and so
bought the rights to Southern Cross and Mospeada. Macek/HG wrote a
multi-generation story, edited (some would say chopped) their 3 new
acquisitions to fit, and Robotech was born.
The edited version of Macross became the section of Robotech featuring Rick,
Lisa, & Minmay. Southern Cross became the Dana Sterling section. Mospeada
became the Scott Bernard section.
The originals are available in subtitled form as part of the Robotech
Perfect Collection. In each tape you get 2 eps of the original series, and
the correcponding 2 eps of Robotech (so the tape with Mospeada 1 & 2 gets
you the first 2 eps of the Scott Bernard section, etc)
