"Akane..." he whisperes softly, almost nervously, as if to confirm my
presence. I blush a little and look up at him. "Hai, Ranma. Welcome
home..."

He smiles and puts his arm around me, "I'm sorry, Akane... I-"

I place a finger to his lips to silence him, "I know... Just promise
never to leave again."

"I promise..." he says softly.

I look into his eyes and see the certainty of his words, and finally
my torture ends.

Was Ranma going to apologize for being gone so long, or was he going to
apologize for coming back without having found a cure?  Did he find one, or
did he just grow up enough to come to terms with his condition?  To realize
that it really didn't matter, and that he could quit torturing himself, and
Akane?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Well... You're not meant to know. It's really up to you. The point is 
that Akane doesn't care about it at all and that he drove them apart more
for his own fear of commitment that for a cure. (or something like that. I
never rally analysed it that much. It wa written on emotion alone.)
