keep win95.  '95 is SUCH an improvement over win 3.1.
give it a try first.  i have NEVER had a problem with Windows 95...
once you have your internet connection going again, beef up '95 
with stuff from http://www.windows95.com and you'll wonder how 
you ever liked 3.1.

as for the talk about destroying your hard disk and so on...
i have never seen this in the large number of '95 computers
i've worked on, but here is a hint:  stay away from
controller card device drivers for dos.  for instance, i had
a device driver for my old Promise controller, but I went
ahead and used the windows 95 driver instead.  

in general, to stay away from trouble, 
***do your configuration the '95 way.***  not _your_ way.  _their_ 
way.

for example, when uninstalling programs, use the UnInstallShield 
(under Add/Remove Programs) rather than simply deleting the program
from your hard disk; that way, registry entries are also reversed,
along with other stuff that's hard to put back manually.  get 
windows 95 drivers whenever possible.  use 32-bit win95 programs
preferentially to 16-bit programs.

the work involved in setting up '95 is more than that needed to get
win 3.1 going, but the full potential of convenience and speed is
greater in windows 95.  the taskbar, right-mouse-clicks, preemptive
multitasking, separate message queues for each program meaning
that no ONE bad program can crash the whole system, and OLE
for complete system customization, are the first things i think of
when i think of windows 95.

p.s. i am running nt, but if i couldn't i would use win'95.
