Me and a few friends did that once.  It was quite neat, but the
story died a dismal death because a chain is only as strong as its
weakest link. ;)  Pity.

On a larger scale this was done as a book series titled _The
Dungeon_ or something like that.  Every author would write a whole
book in the series continuing where the last one left off.  The
quality was varying, but the final author really killed it off.
He had written the first book (which was quite good as a setup)
and the last one - which was utter crap because he simply scrapped
the climax that the preceding authors had built up to, just to do
his own thing.  Talk about uncooperative. :(
