An author inserting him or herself into a story that they are writing is
not a bad thing in and of itself. It is all the baggage that usaully goes
along with it. The 'fic is usually quickly turned into an ego-fest, where
the author saves the world, solves everyones personal problems, gets the
babes, has the best haircut, and pretty much overshadows everyone else.
I think the deciding factor in weather such a story will work or not, is if
the author takes himself too seriously or not. In the majority of what I
consider 'good' self-insertion fanfics, the author is laughing at himself.
Your character may get powerful in TGACFH, but I still think you pass this
test.
(Of course, Like everything else, there are exceptions to this. OMG? is
taken from a serious view point, and I think it is an excellent piece of
fiction.)
