Very much so. First, in the before-last episode, the DD Girls and the 
Sailor Senshi (except for Moon) die in tragic deaths. In the final 
episode, Endymion dies when Beryl's rock spear shatters (hit by his 
rose) and a piece hits him in the back. Beryl dies and her body is 
possessed by Queen Metallia, who is in turn defeated by Sailor Moon and 
the ghosts of the Sailor Senshi. Then she dies after using the crystal's 
full power. All very touching. Parents in Japan actually got quite upset 
after the before-last one (even though they said the Senshi die in the 
title).

Parents?!  What about all those screaming and crying kids we've heard so
much about?  I've been told that the ending of the first season of Sailor
Moon almost permanently traumatized an entire generation of little kids in
Japan <g>
