He's right - about the original Japanese series.

In the 2nd last episode in the first series Sailors Mars, Mercury Venus 
and Jupiter die in the final assault on the Dark Kingdom.  In the last 
episode Sailor Moon dies defeating Queen Metallia.

Watch the last episode of the first series and the first episode of 
Sailor Moon R to see how they fixed this. :-)

Seeing the Sailor Senshi go down to death and defeat made watching the 
whole series worthwhile, a pity the bad guys lost as well. :-)
