Warped Reality part one.
<> denotes Japanese speech
It was another fine morning in residential St. Paul, and Conrad
was walking along oblivious to the outside world. His nose buried in a
book, yet unerringly his steps found their way towards downtown without
need for conscious thought. Conrad continued on undisturbed at six foot
three not many people tented to bother the rather introverted young man.
Dressed in a typical pair of tan pants with a dark green wind breaker he
presented an unassuming air to the outside world.
Something was wrong. The blond haired high school graduate
looked up, as he glanced around to take in his surroundings he unconsciously
replaced his latest book in his ever-present USA cup bag. Something is
definitely wrong thought Conrad as he saw that he was surrounded by new
clean buildings and all of the street signs were written in kenji?
"Um, can you tell me where I am?" Con asked a nicely dressed Asian man
in a business suit.
His only reply was a broken "I no speak English" and a wave as the man
quickly continued on his way.
Now wandering aimlessly and thoughly confused Conrad made his
way towards what looked like a highschool. 'maybe there will be an English
department in there somewhere `he thought as he entered the courtyard intent
on finding a teacher. As he passed by various crowds eating lunch he over
herd enough to recognize that the language they were speaking was Japanese.
"well now I know that spending all of that money buying anime wasn't
completely wasted" he mumbled to himself" at least I can understand about
one word in ten."
<Can I help you sir> said a voice casing Con to break out of his thoughts
and enter the real world. As he looked up to see who had spoken to him he
saw a cute Asian girl in a blue school uniform. She had short black hair so
dark that the sunlight caused iridescent blue highlights to form whenever
she moved.
"what? I mean Nani? I mean sorry I don't speak Japanese" has his stuttering
reply to the smoothly flowing Japanese that proved much beyond his meager
language skills picked up by watching anime and Shogun.
"Oh what may I do for you sir?" she replied in almost perfect English.
Followed quickly by an apology that her English was so poor.
"Well I think that your English is very good, but somehow I have gotten lost.
Can you help me get to the American embassy?" an abashed Conrad asked
looking down at his feet to avoid making eye contact. 'man this is embarrassing'
he thought ' I must sound like a complete idiot right now'
"let me go find out if it is OK with the principle for me to take you there" she
said before running off "just wait here for me to come back."
Left to his thoughts Conrad tried to make sense of what was happening
to him and why he was in Japan instead of the U. S. The only possible explanation
that he could come up with was partial amnesia and even that didn't explain
everything. After a quick search he found that he didn't even have a passport
or any yen. The thought of amnesia really scarred him, what have I lost a week
a month a year who knows what I have forgotten. The onset of depression was
averted by the return of the energetic Japanese student.
"The principle says that because I am so far ahead in all of my classes it is OK
for me to take the rest of the day off to help you get back to the embassy." as
she lead him towards a nearby buss shelter at the end of the street she asked"
Why did you come to Japan? are you an exchange student or just visiting?"
"Well Um I was planning too come in the second year of college but now I don't
remember how I got here" was his reply after a few moments of consideration.
At the embassy after saying goodby they both just stood there for a
moment. Then She said" here is my number and address in case you need any
help later, I would like to see you again if you are going to be staying in
Tokyo long."
"Thanks Um, hey we have not been introduced yet, my name is Conrad
Borsting but you can just call me Con"
"Oh how silly of me My name is Mizuno Ami, well I will see you later then
goodby." after saying this she jumped back on the departing bus while Con
stood there with a look of stunned disbelief on his face.
'no way I mean there is just no way that this is all happening to me
`He thought as he went up the embassy steps, `this just cant be real, it must
just be a coincidence, yah that's what it is just a coincidence.' that decided
he approached the front desk and asked to see the ambassador. After going
though various people he finally was landed in front of the embassy doctor.
And he said how he had no memory of anything since the fifth of April and
had no Idea why he was currently in Japan. After hearing this the Doctor
thought for a while before saying "I think that y ou are extremely lucky
Mr. Borsting you seem to be missing only 25 days, I am sure that you will
have a full recovery or your memory in time. Meanwhile well we locate
were you are staying and ascertain what you are doing here I would like
you to stay here in the embassy. For now you should go get some rest
and I will tell you tomorrow what we have found."
"thank you very much doctor" Con said as he headed for the front desk to
get a room assignment. 'Im just glad I don't have to worry about it any more'.
As soon as he was lead to what would be his new room he collapsed on the bed
mentally worn out from the days shock and activity.
