I don't think that the village women have to be beaten to be
married.  In that case the strongest women would never have
children (legitimate children that is) thus weakening the village's
population.

The rule about being beaten and marrying specifically mentions
*outsiders*, so I suspect that they can marry whomever they want
regardless of any fighting contests, *unless* they are beaten by
an outsider of the other sex in which case they have to marry him.

Despite cologne's statement that it's their way to marry a strong
man I guess you can get by on... other qualities :)
