It's a very good observation Jeanne.
I have to agree with this. I do not know anyone who was raped - but I know
someone who came close - not a pleasant experience.
Personally - I'm in favor of public floggings for some *MINOR* crimes - so,
castration doesn't seem like a non-fitting response for a rape (assuming
perpitrator was male - what would you do for a female perpitrator?)
They are currently appealing that descision.
Now the real question I have is that when Americans go to other
countries, that country has to follow American law. When foreigners for
America, they have to follow American law. Why?
Because America has this attitude that we are right and you are wrong
(unless you listen to us) that has popped up time and time again throughout
history.
Sadly, I don't think this mass-ideal will go away any time soon.
More to the point, why is it that rape is considered such an
insignificant crime in this country that claims to be much more open and
want to provide the victim with restitution.
Why do you want to make a hero out of rapist by the manner you are when
they are criminals who make women a victem forever?
I think the concept of 'dominant male' and 'hapless female' has yet to fade
from this world as it stands today. I like to think of myself as a very
open person - one who accepts all people equally and tries to promote this,
but this is not always the case. I do find myself making off-color
comments, racial slurs, derogatory comments, etc towards other people. I
see this as a character flaw, and I'm trying to fix it. However, I don't
think I will ever get rid of it - it's too ingrained in my system and
thinking - which I feel results from the society that I was exposed to.
[Ok, question - how many of you know of older folks (say 70 or over) that
consider African-Americans as 'niggers' because they were raised with the
word, and don't see it as derogatory? I know a few.]
Hell, just going to college, talking to my neighbor in the next class seat
I've heard comments that would make KKK members blush. Let's face it, this
'peace loving, accepting society' has a hell of a way to go in a lot of
things - not to mention feeling about rape.
It does not matter what sex the perpetraitor is, the punishment should
fit the crime, and it has in past.
The American case is the first exception that has ever occured.
Sucks, don't it. I had a Civics teacher that would have loved to seen
public floggings come back. I agree, wholeheartedly, I think it would
change people's minds about commiting crimes before they did them.
I know people have made heroes out of Bonny and Clyde and other s who
kill and take freedom away, but why is that mindset a part of American
culture?
Mistique? The thought of living on the edge? Hollywood? (mmmm, could be.)
I somehow think the answer could also explain why some of the people I know
think that professional wrestling is A)*REAL* and B)the be-all-end-all of
sports.
