     Nope. You're always supposed to use one space after a period, question
mark, exclamation point, or colon. It was an old secretaries myth about 2
spaces, and therefore found its way into typing classes, then english classes.

  Even if those were its origins (which sounds doubtful), putting two spaces 
after a period is now accepted manuscript format. 
  Editors gripe if you submit a manuscript with only one space after each 
period.
