This is a reply to a personal e-mail. I don't think "Hibiki" will
mind.

Ah...then you're parting from the 'official' storyline. (Nothing
wrong with that, just making an observation).
In the official OVA/comic version, Kiyone was only assigned to Mihoshi
AFTER she stressed out.
My philosophy regarding TENCHI MUYO is this: until I see it animated,
it ain't official as far as I'm concerned. Very few series are
supported by as much non-animated text as TENCHI MUYO. I think it's a
bit unfair to expect fanfic writers to follow it all, and it's even
more unfair to expect the readers to follow it all. Therefore, my
policy with the two 'fics I've written is that I follow from the
animation *only*. No 101 Facts, no manga, no mook notes, no nothing.
Because, let's face it, the animation is all that 90% of all
English-speaking TENCHI fans are familiar with.
As for the "official" story of a level-headed Mihoshi being stressed
out and going wacko, IMHO, that's a fairy story, even if it was
scribbled down under a Pioneer letterhead by some employee (or even the
creator) as "canon". *Nowhere* in the anime has it ever been implied
that Mihoshi has ever been any different than she is now, save for
Kagato's single rather cryptic comment that could mean anything.
Mihoshi doesn't act "stressed out"; she's consistently the happiest,
most content character in the show.
I might also add that the very existence of Kiyone is suspect as far as
officialness is concerned. Save for the Mihoshi Special, there's never
been any animated evidence of her acting as anything other than a solo
agent, and nothing in the Mihoshi Special can be taken as official,
thanks to Pretty Sammy and Doctor Washu.
So, yes "Galaxy Police Mihoshi's ACADEMY DAYS" is an "alternate past".
(After all, you don't really think the official version will actually
be that they first met as cadets, do you?) But as far as I'm
concerned, all of Mihoshi's pasts, and all the pasts in TENCHI MUYO
itself, are "alternate", until an official version is put up there *on
the screen*, which I doubt will ever happen.
