[From the Megami ML. Part 4 of 5]
Thanks for all the responses, teen gang. I should learn
to be sarcastic more often! I'm glad that people are enjoying
these, although I now feel obligated to make them more
"professional".
Before I begin; I was informed that "Meta-Matics" and "Malice
and whatever I can never remember the title" both have happy
endings, so I will eventually be reviewing them. You have to
understand how hypocritical I am. If the fanfic ends with
everyone getting together, then I'm happy, no matter how much
pain they went through. If someone dies, I get *very* upset.
Example: There was a Maison Ikkoku fanfic I read recently with
Godai dying. It was extremely well-written, but...DAMMIT,
HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO ME! On the other hand, I recently
read the Ryoga crossover series, and despite the huge pile-up
of bodies, we have a Ranma/Akane relationship and a Ryoga/
Nabiki relationship ending happily. This made it all OK for
me. Shameless, aren't I?
Anyway, moving on...
"Doctor Who and the Tree of Doom" by Omega
This one is probably the fanfic that got me to start this
whole review thing. As I mentioned before, I also review
books for the rec.arts.drwho newsgroup. I like AMG, but
Doctor Who has been an obsession since Age 10. So I had hopes
for this one.
They weren't in vain. This is very good. Mainly a Skuld
fic, it also features the Sixth Doctor, a surprise to those
of us who know how unpopular he was. If there were some of
you who wondered how the Doctor could kill a companion in cold
blood to prevent her pain, well...Colin's Doctor would do that.
Anyway, it's incomplete, but I like what I see so far. Good
"new" companion. (Thank you for not using Mel. Actually, Skuld's
hammer could be put to good use on Mel...)
"The Eternal Wanderer" by Gustavo Cordova Avila
I got the feeling while reading this that I was missing something.
Well-written, but I felt German was someone who needed more
explaining. However, I liked Urd in this one (a formidable
task), so it's got that much going for it. Also incomplete.
Inflatable Goddess stuff by Various
..no. Sorry. How 'bout an inflatable Megumi? (Definitely the
most underused and underrated character. I dig Megumi.) I
suppose they're ok if this is your thing...no, actually, I just
couldn't get through these. Context. It's a *good* thing.
Look into it.
"Oh My God" by Brett Handy
This is very well-writtten, and Urd is OK, but...I *hate* these
types of stories. They are termed "author-as-character"
stories by politer people, but I call them MarySue stories.
DON'T PUT YOURSELF IN FANFICS! Even if it's exactly like you,
rename the character! Anyway, very good, but I just couldn't
get past this. I'll take a while to review Jack Ji's fanfic
for the same reason.
"The Many Shades of Urd" by Loyd Goodbar
It exists. It just didn't grab me. At all. @
Sigh. Better stop there. Next, an attempt to wrap this up,
with the ones I haven't gotten to yet. By the way, here's
what I'm *not* reviewing:
The two vignettes: too short
God's Willing IV: no context for me to figure it out
Iczer X-Over - what the hell is Iczer? Can't find it.
Growing Pains: reviewed previously
Back to Skuld: reviewed previously
I'm getting most of the info for this, by the way, from
Omega's excellent AMG guide to fanfic. Good work, keep
it up.
P.S. I've been pounding my head against a brick user unknown
trying to subscribe to the fanfic list. Is it fanfic-request@
cais.com? fanfic-request@andrew.cais.com? Fanfic-request@
buggerall.cais.com? Help.
