It's not to signify a fanfic per se, it's to signify that it's from the
Fanfic ML!  

Some idiots (like me) are on multiple MLs (because we have no lives) and
can't keep track of who's sending what from where.

I, too, am one of those idiots.  I've noticed that some messages somehow escape the [FanFic] labeller... I just do a search for "To:fanfic", but not all mailers can do that...  Makes sense...  But I'll still have the problem of sorting through spam ^_^
