You've never seen Blackadder?  I refuse to believe that, the scene
was to close. Anyway, it was a british comedy show staring Rowan
Atkinson as Edmund BlackAdder (or one of his decendants)

This is Blackadder the Third (I think, I may have this wrong), the
episode is all about Blackadders expedition to the 'new world', and
he has to hire a ship, and ends up talking to this legless captain.

I think it was Balckadder the Second. First was the Medevial one, Second 
was in Elizabethan times (which this episode was), Third around Louis 
the Fourteenth, Fourth WWI.
