True, things would have been easier, but the protagonist is 
hardly that simple a character.  He is conflicted, a complex person, and 
he hardl ever has taken the easy way in life, has he? :)  I tried to make 
him pitiable (for the agony he is suffering) and despisable (for what he 
did.)  I guess I tried to make him human.
