It means Meal Ready to Eat.  What it is, is the worst tasting...  
something you could ever have the misfortune to consume.

     Excuse me, but all this time, you guys are saying that MRE's are the
worst possible thing to consume. I disagree. Try C-Rations, then tell me
that MRE's are the worst.
