I admit to doing a lot of mind-twisting.  Supposedly, 
reading Shampoo's book warped her brain...the incident when
ranma re-enters the house in the morning is supposed to show
that akane is looking at ranma in a different way.

and she decides that ranma pays more attention to shampoo and ukyo
because they are "sensual."  and so, with the same ferocity that
akane takes ukyo on in the last manga i got, she takes to this
so she can stand a chance against shampoo. (all this about
ranma paying attention to shampoo and ukyo, as well as having to
keep up with shampoo, is all in her mind, of course.)
