Subject: I admit it; Disney is Better
I first became interested in Anime in 1990 when I rescued some manga
"phone books" from the trash at a local college dormitory where a Japanese
exchange student was cleaning house. After that, I happened upon the FHE
Robotech tapes at a local video store and decided to rent them because I
couldn't find anything else to rent that day and they looked kind of like
the manga books I had rescued. I then discovered Adam Warren's Dirty Pair
comics, Ninja High School and Outlanders manga during the next year. I
soon became a die-hard anime and manga fan regularly visiting two
different anime clubs in my state and amassing a tape collection of over
100 tapes (many of them in straight Japanese--I was really dedicated).
However, I have recently been stunned to see the dramatic increase in the
quality and sophistication of Disney animation. I used to riducule them,
but I can't anymore.
Mike: What's with the "Anymore"? I loved Fantasia, and that's ancient.
Giles: Yeah, but oi bet he was a lot more sadistic as a little kid.
It started with the Little Mermaid and just kept
getting better. Can anyone truthfully say that the sadness and intensity
of feeling in the KOR movie, Gunbuster, or Grave of the Fireflies could
remotely compare to the scene where Ariel loses her voice?
Seamus: (In a truthful tone) The sadness an intensity 'o feeling...
Mahon: Smartass.
Or how about
the strong enviornmental message in Pocahontas? Anime totally ignores
enviornmental concerns. Also, with all the strong female characters
Disney has been featuring,
Mike: I don't really see Ariel as assertive, but he has a point. The
female characters in anime are pretty submissive...

how can Japanese animators justify the passive
housewife roles that female anime characters are constantly relegated to?
I could continue, but I think I have proved my case.

I must reluctantly
confess that I have wasted the last six years of my life pursuing anime,
when the finest animation was was easily and conveniently available from
Disney. I hang my head in shame. As we mark the beginning of this most
auspicious month, I call upon other otaku who have been afraid to admit
their error to come forth and admit their folly as I have.
Seamus: Now THAT's tragic.
Giles: Wot, that he wasted six years?
Seamus: Naw, that he views 'em as wasted.
Mahon: (grunts) Folly? Heh.
Giles: Somehow, oi doubt the other "otaku" are gonna be real interested
in admitting.
