I hugely recommend them to any battletech fan but read the first 
series first. As many of the characters in the second series are 
either from the first or the sons/daugthers of the first it adds to 
the story to see from whence they came ( Phelen and Kai were always 
going to be superhuman with fathers like Justin Allard-Liao and the 
the Kells! )

Wish i could have read the first series first, but they havn't been reprinted,
and i have yet to find a library that carries them <sigh>.  From having
read most of Stackpole's other books, both Phelen and Kai have *far* surpassed
what their fathers were capable of and have become legands in their own rights.
