OK, I think I found the evidence to back this up in Manga Vol.13.  After 
Ranma gets "powered down" and leaves in shame.  Akane's expression when 
she finds out plus her crying on the way to school shows that she really 
loves him.  Later on, when she runs away from home in search of Ranma 
also shows that she loves him.  Actually, the whole story arc goes to 
show that through their actions, Ranma and Akane really do love each other.
