The Japanese Animation Fan Fiction Mailing List Archives Scrapbook
(is that title long enough for you? ;)
I decided on a whim to put together a slowly lengthening scrapbook of
memories, the majority of which come from the FFML. Some are from IRC, but
those are harder to keep reasonably edited. <G>
This segment of the scrapbook covers October.

I've fixed a few things and added a bit more to it. BTW, can you think
of a better name than 'Nabiki and the Airship'? Also, where should they
go next - the shops or the school?

If you don't know, I'm not telling ;)
If you need an idea, how about this one?
Wakko Warner calls for pizza and reaches Belldandy
or
The Warners as Urd, Belldandy, and Skuld
I thought about doing this myself then realized I have only the vaguest
ideas of what Ah, My Goddess is about and what the characters look like
or do.

Warners as the Goddesses? *screams for a LONG time...*
I'm not even going to go there... ;)
But I thought of perhaps a "Pinky and the Brain and Urd."
Thanks for the idea! ;)

<Aaron Stolz> What in the world is Blake's 7?
If you've ever seen Doctor Who, it's got about that level of special
effects. If you've ever seen the original Star Trek series, it's got
that kind of a story.
The plot, briefly: There's a guy named Blake (obviously), who *was* the
leader of a resistance group against a rather overweening Federation.
He was caught, mindwiped, forced to "confess" that "I was misguided", etc.,
and then even that was mindwiped. They couldn't kill him, because then
he'd be a martyr, and there were enough of the crumbling resistance left
who didn't believe his confession. Anyway, that's all before the story
starts.
In the first episode, he finds some of this out. During the series, he
and a group of others (hence the name, Blake's 7) go cruising around the
galaxy, fighting for the rebellion.
Oh yeah. It's not anime. :)

Then I posted my second attempt at prose. "Scyth".

<Wolf> Both of you have written using the same characters before. I'm
talking
about the way you treated them. Hitomi wanted to write about the
relationship between them. You wrote about what was happening
around
them more.

<Hitomi> I did spend several years writing romance novels...
* Hitomi blushes
<Hitomi> I guess that training carried over. I'll try to have a more
rounded view
of the characters in the future.
<Damon> Wait. Isn't this a *good* thing?
<Damon> So, who's read mine? Scyth, that is.
<Hitomi> I read it, but it is not really something that holds me. I never
went in
much for x-file type stories anyways, so it is probably a personal
bias.
I really have no comment on it.
<Damon> Oh well.
<Damon> I didn't exactly mean for it to be purely X-Filesish, especially
with the
focus on Laura after that. I tried to write it more as an
"emotional"
type story, rather than horror/X-Files towards the end. Maybe I
need to
fix it up a bit.

Scifi/romance/angst, it's a very heavy, moody story. Which needed a lot of
work from the comments I got. *shrug*
Comments? Did I mention comments? Guess who sent some. Why would she,
supposedly playfully violent and heavily into comedy for all I knew, have
any interest in an angst ridden story like this one? But my brain was

<Sapphire> On second thought, you couldn't have peeked.
<Ben> Oww, Priss is going to get along with them?? Or is the abrasive side

<Ben> Of course Nene will most likely get along with them well.

Being a bounty hunter was not a good idea on a list full of comedians.
*shrug* Especially when "wanted: spammed or alive" showed up in several

For some odd reason, I'd been playing with a few music modules (S3M's) I'd
found on ftp.cdrom.com one day, and decided to label two of them the "theme
music" for Blue Lightning. After tinkering with one a bit, that is. I
asked the list if they were interested...and found that a certain Tigress
was, to my surprise. After about two weeks of giving her some technical
help with her WinDoze setup, it finally worked. And she enjoyed the moody

<Damon> Sorry, I don't *do* Ranma. Come on, Lupin III anyone? There's
gotta
be a thousand decent plotlines waiting there.
<Sapphire> Sounds like maybe *you* should do Lupin III since you've
obviously

<Damon> But I'm busy writing Blue Lightning and Scyth, part II! :&(
<Sapphire> Personally, I haven't seen it yet. But I will sooner or later.
:)
Sapphire, The Blue Tigress
"Anime Hunter - Who cares about bounties? I'll hunt Anime for free!"
<Damon> Umm, yeah.
<Charles> The reason why there are so many Ranma Fan-fics on this list is
because Ranma Fan-fics are the easiest to write. It's one of the
closest
Animes to reality.
<Roy> Close to reality? Perhaps Maison Ikkoku. But the real reason is
because Ranma hits a stability point. Nothing new ever really
happens.
And characters never really change.
<Damon> NANI?? A boy (or is it a girl?) and his/her father (or is it a
panda?),
do the martial arts thing. Ranma/Ranko and co. have a half a dozen
love polygons (as opposed to triangles), etc. Reality? Maison
Ikkoku is
just a *bit* closer, thanks.
:)
<Wolf> REALITY?!?!? Ack, sorry. Actually I think they're easy to write
because
Ranma is the sitcom of anime.
<Damon> And the one with the least point to it. Maison Ikkoku is more
meaningful, and harder to write, IMOHO.
<Bellamy> Ranma is one of the only animes with well defined characters.
Most
people can think of "What would Ranma do here..." or "What would
Kuno
say if..." Many other animes lack sensitivity or are overdramatic.
This can be
the result of bad dubbs/subs. Ranma is also one of the most
entertaining
anime/mangas.
<Damon> Maison Ikkoku can compete beautifully, then. It certainly does
*not* lack
sensitivity, and although some may consider it overdramatic, their
tastes
would tend towards the silly anyway. Mine don't, and that's one
reason I
can't deal with Ranma.
<Charles> Well that [Ranma is the sitcom of anime] too. But I think most
Anime are
a little too farfetched to write a resonable story about them. Take
for example Tenchi Muyo. It's one of my favorite animes but you can't
really make any good stories out of it unless you deviate a lot from the
original.
But then I could be wrong. Nah.
<Damon> Okay, try Lupin III. You don't really have to deviate from the
original,
since the "original" deviated alot from *itself* anyway. :) As I
said
before, there's tons of good stories waiting to be written on this
one.
But I don't have the time. Or the plot. *sigh*
<Steve> Maro To.
<Damon> If you don't cut that out, Steve...
<Steve> We slice, we dice!
<Damon> Ugh! :)
(I must be *really* bored; I'm writing dialogue for a friend of
mine)
<DaR> That's half of it. The other half is that the Ranma-verse has no
real closure. Maison Ikkoku has a very distinct
beginning/middle/end
and resolves all the relationships that occur. Kimagure Orange
Road is
much the same way. Tenchi Muyo has closure because it's a
developing
story with no real gaps in it yet. Trying to insert a story into
one
of these is tough, since you have to be sure that it doesn't affect
the
continuity, or if it does then you have to insure that the universe
has
somewhere to go afterwards.
<Damon> That's one of the main reasons why fanfics on MI, etc., are so
scarce.
But even so, they're doable.
If all else fails, there's always Lupin III, folks. Or Spirit of
Wonder.
<DaR> Ranma on the other hand is very episodic... there isn't a terrible
amount
of development between the characters in the span of a couple
episodes.
<Damon> There are spans of Maison Ikkoku where the same thing can be said.
<DaR> This leaves it kinda open for people to throw short adventures into
it without affecting the continuity at all. In additition Ranma
has
a lot of different relationships (both in the romantic polygons and
the other intercharacter relations) on which to hang plot threads.
However it isn't too open, like UY, which has too *much*
openness...
there's no real goal for any of the characters, just a different
weirdness
every episode. That's too boring to write as fanfic.
It's kind of interesting if you note which TV/manga series have
the most
quanitity and best quality fanfics written. In pure quantity it's
Ranma,
BGC, Robotech, and then DP. Quality-wise, IMO at least, about the
same,
possibly switching DP and Robotech (Ryan Matthews and Larry Mann's
series are great). If you stop and think these are also the same
series with
a good amount of openness and well-defined characters. Robotech
seems to be an exception in that more often the stories have
new/made
up characters since the plot focuses more on the mecha than the
people.
The other thing is that these are all the more popular/commonly
seen
series, most likely since the universes are good to start with.
<Damon> I would *not* restrict the "best quality" to those. I'd say that
the best
quality stories show up in quantity, in those. Ne?
<DaR> As Damon pointed out though, there are some other series that could
easily be turned into fanfics. I think Ah-My-Goddess is an
excellent
platform for people looking to do romantic comedy, and Gundam would
be
superb for those more interested in action/mecha. For those who've
read Gunsmith Cats, that would be another easy to work with action
series. And the one that suprises me is the lack of City-Hunter
fiction.... Hmmm... now I've got images in my head...
<Damon> Go ahead. City Hunter, I'd love to see a fanfic of.
<DaR> Wow. That turned out to be quite the lecture/rant. I'm inspired
now.
As soon as I finish my homework maybe I'll go jot down some ideas
for
some things.
<Roy> What, you [Damon] didn't like my Arslaan fanfic? Or the
Godzilla/R1/2/
Nuku crossover? Or maybe you just like the two billion BGC stories
on
ftp.std.com?
<Damon> I took a look at the Arslaan thing, but Quantum was calling that
night. It got deleted. Godzilla I sent out to lunch; I wasn't in
the mood
for that amount of silliness. And I usually stay away from BGC.
Maybe I should be a bit more specific in my requests.
SciFi. SciFi/Romance. Romantic Comedy. Comedy.
It has to have a point, (unlike UY) no magic, (unlike Ranma/AMG!)
but
not *too* serious.
Maybe I'm limiting myself a bit much, but those are my (usual)
genres of
choice.
<Sapphire> Hmm...scifi/romance/comedy...
...outer space/love triangle/silly traits or attitudes...
...a point...no magic...not too serious...
...interspecies relations...lots of gadgets...
...hmm...
...maybe I should start on this later as I already have two stories
to
finish that are competing for the first and second finished fanfic
spots :)
You've given me a great idea for a story though. thanks! :)

Anyway, not too silly either. As I said, it has to have a point to
the
comedy. UY and Irresponsible Captain Tylor don't. MI does. For
example.
<Sapphire> What sort of 'point' do you want? Needle point? A point of
view? A
point of departure? Maybe that's beside the point. I was on the
