Quite frankly, since I didn't see the original series when it

was being shown in the mid to late eighties, I'm not as big of a fan
of the Robotech universe as I could be.  My fiance is just getting me
interested in the enitre series, starting with the New Generation
and I remember watching the original movie and liking it (no
subtitles, no dubs, pure anime).  I bought Macross II the movie and
loved that.  So while you have at least one more Robotech fan in the making,
it's taking me a while to warm up to the series.
