Derogatory - No. It is informal however.
In Australian informal usage: Aussies - Australians, Yanks - Americans and
Poms - British.
Careful which Yanks your talking to when you call them that, though. I
wouldn't be insulted if you called me that, but someone from the South
might.
And if some Johnie Rebb called me a Yank, it probably would be meant to be
derogatory.
