Well, I have a humble opinion about all of this.

Fan fiction is the way for bad writers such as myself to indulge 
themselves in a bit of low price publication by taking a character, most 
of the type without approval of copyright, and then putting them in 
situations that they would not normally find themselves in.

Having writen a few of these, it becomes somewhat of a cliche for anyone 
to define what fan fiction is or should be.

Fan fiction is just that.

Fiction written by fans of a book, short story, series, etc.  which 
people do not want to see die.

They see a situation, think of something, and go for it.

Ask Bert what I'm doing to SK or Twister how Darlene is getting a long 
and you'll see what I mean.

They created characters and situations based upon "What if this 
happened?

That is what fan fiction is about.
