Yes all great stories - But  David Weber "Honor Harrington" stories are also
worth considering, nepoleonic naval tales retold as space opera with a good
background of associated politics and predjudice.  Like Bujold, Weber has 

the

knack of writing his heroines and heros into utterly awful situations and 
then getting them out of these in believeable way

You mean there is another person on this planet who has heard of Weber???
He's another of my favorite authors, but nobody i ever talk to has ever
heard of him :(  Glad to see i'm not the only one ;) Hmmm, if i keep 
responding to these i'll need to make a list of *my* favorite authors.

Although I've got the first Weber book, I have to admit being a little 
leery of picking it up. I've had a couple of people whose opinions I 
respect call the series a rip-off of the Hornblower books -- and I 
respect the Hornblower books a great deal.
