Robert G Orick verbalized:
I came in today to check my e-mail... and found out that someone got into
my account and erased all the messages that I did not save, new messages
that I had not read yet, and text files that kept my stories. The only
messages that I had hidden away were private e-mail that I had stored in
another file until I could answer them. The damage can be repaired, but
I'm still disturbed. Whoever it was left a message teasing me about what
he/she did... I now have lost 148 unread messages from the Ranma 1/2 and
Fanfic MLs and a few other files. Time to change my password and hope it
doesn't happen again.

Virgo: Twilight Chapters 1,2, and the 30% complete version of 3 were
destroyed, too...
Zodiak: I WILL KILL WHOEVER DID THIS!!!!!!! HOW COULD SOMEONE BREAK INTO
THIS ACCOUNT LIKE THAT?!
Dude - as a computer consultant I have a few pieces of advice.
- new password - do not make it like the old one, not even in flavor
or style. If you used anime-type passwords in the past try using football
terms or something.
- try to pick a password that you can easily and quickly type that
no one else can read your fingers while you type it. (One handed/ mostly
one handed passwords are extremely quick)
- MAKE SURE YOUR PROTECTIONS ARE SET ON YOUR ACCOUNT - If you left
a 'back door' in to your account by letting others have privs of being able
to read/write files in your account, they might just do it.
- If you give your password to someone else (I DO NOT ADVISE THIS AT
ALL!) make sure they can be trusted and they are bright enough not to SCREW
UP!
- Never leave your self logged on and leave the terminal unattended.
I'm willing to bet that you left a terminal and forgot to log off and
someone took advantage of it. I've seen this happen too many times (not to
mention it's happened to me)
- One other thing - talk to your computer center and see if they can
get you back up your account. My school has a policy of backing up the
systems at a MINIMUM of once a week. So it may be possible to get back some
things you lost, and minimize the damage.
Hope this works out ok.

PS - I still have a lot of your personal mail to me if you need any of it.
