"doujinshi" community, where small press run manga style fan creations
are popular enough to have twice yearly conventions attended by
thousands (the Comike Market); check out

for a number of scanned in covers....  A number of pros have come out
of the doujinshi community, including Kenchi Sonada of BGC/Gall
Force/Riding Bean/Gun Smith Cats fame.  I seem to remember that the
slightly lemon Antarctic Press title _Silibuster_ is a doujinshi.
