Chapter Two

Captain's Log
Stardate 55688.28
1430h

At the order of Admiral Brand, I have agreed to allow Starfleet Academy to
use the Excelsior as a temporary educational tool. My "first officer" is
one Cadet First Class Dominic J. Leone. After reviewing his records, I see
that he is the adopted brother of my real first officer, Commander Aareel
Elanniss. When I meet with him at fifteen hundred to determine how we are
going to handle shipboard operations.
I don't know, but somehow I think that things are going to be all right.

Captain Todd James, commanding

"Commander Leone," started James, "I want you to take command of arriving
parties on decks twelve and above. I'll take decks thirteen on down. You
need to make sure all personnel are settled in and remind them of the crew
meeting on the recreation deck at seventeen fifteen. Find those personnel
whom have been designated as the senior staff and inform them they are
required here in the forward observation lounge at eighteen hundred. I
would also like you to design a three shift rotation before we leave orbit
at nineteen hundred tonight."
"Aye, sir. May I see the list for the senior staff, Captain?"
James adjusted his padd and handed it over. "I assume you know most of
these people, Number One?"
Dominic smiled at the familiarity as he glanced at the list. "Collins? I
would have put Peterson here and Williams there. Who made this list up,
anyway?"
	"Commander Selak."
"Selak doesn't know enough but grades and fitness reports."
James looked at him. "Well, Number One, you know these people better than
anyone else. You redesign the assignments as you see fit."
"Captain, I would need more authority to change assignments. Like at least
a real lieutenant."
	"How about a real captain?"
Dominic smiled again. "Thank you, sir. I'll have this done in a second."

"Spacedock Operations to Excelsior, come in, please," sounded the commlink
on the bridge. "Spacedock, this is Commander Leone, go ahead."
"Cadet, this is Lieutenant David Peterson. I wish to speak with Captain
James, please."
James swiveled in his chair. "Lieutenant, as long as Mr. Leone is
participating in this exercise, he will be address at his proper rank."
Peterson stammered. "I-uh, er, of course, sir. Captain, Spacedock would
like to inform you that the Sutherland and the Gorkon are going to be
entering orbit similarly to yours. Spacedock requires that you hold a
stationary orbit near the north pole."
	"Acknowledged, Spacedock. Excelsior, out."
Leone blew air at his hair. "Thank you, sir."
"I will not have anyone insult my first officer," said James, with a smirk.
"Take the conn, Number One. Move us into stationary orbit above the north
pole."
Leone walked over to the helm. "Aye, sir," he said taking the controls.
"Captain, Starfleet Academy signals that they are ready to beam our crew
aboard."
James sighed. No turning back, now, he thought. "Stations, please, Number
One. Here we go."
	They both entered the turbolift.

"Lieutenant Commander" Lora Jean and "Lieutenant" Fred Michaels beamed
aboard with the first party. Leone walked forward to greet his friends.
"Permission to come aboard, Commander?" asked Lora.
"Permission granted. Welcome aboard the Excelsior. Mr. Michaels, you will
report to Engineering. Mr. Jean, you are with me."
Fred shot a glance over at Lora, then nodded at Dominic. "Aye, sir," he
said as he left the transporter room.
Lora looked worried as she and Leone walked to a corner. "Mr. Jean, you
are ship's second officer. This is your copy of the ship's assignments.
Report to Transporter Room Six and direct crewmembers to their stations.
There will be a crew meeting at seventeen fifteen on the recreation deck.
Find those members of the senior staff and inform them that there is a staff
meeting at eighteen hundred in the forward observation lounge."
	"Aye, sir."
"Get to work, Commander. Report to me if there are any problems."
Jean's expression did not change as she walked out towards Transporter Room
Six.

"My name is Captain Todd James. For the next six weeks, you will perform
as this vessel's crew. This is an educational exercise, people, so let's
make it a good one. Your department heads and senior staff have already
been designated, so you will be expected to follow their orders to the
letter. Any disputes will be handled by First Officer Leone or Second
Officer Jean. Department heads will reports to the senior staff meeting at
eighteen hundred. Assistant Heads are not required to attend, but are
encouraged to. Thank you all. The Excelsior will leave orbit in six hours.
Dismissed."
As the crew disassembled, Commander Jean walked over to Dominic and
whispered, "Now that we have forty minutes before the meeting, I would like
to talk to you ...... Sir."
Leone eyed her. "As long as it is brief, Lieutenant Commander."
Captain James chose that moment to interrupt them. "Ah, Number One. I
want you to meet with Commander Jean and go over the mission details."
Jean spoke before Leone could even open his mouth. "Yes, sir. We were
about to take that meeting now."
"Very good. I'll be on the bridge if you need me, Number One."
Leone used every ounce of control he could muster to keep from yelling at
Lora at that moment and calmly stated, "Aye, sir."
James smiled and walked into a turbolift. The recreation deck was empty
except for the ship's services department holding a staff meeting. Leone
looked at Jean and said, "Walk with me, Commander."
