The snow-covered roof-top was a strange place at night.
Moonlight from above blended and competed with the lights of the city
creating distorted shadows from other overhanging
buildings. The snow soaked up both light and darkness and ranged in
colour from white to dark blue. The whole place had an unreal look like the
set for some sort of movie. The wrong sort.
Inside the building happy cultists drank egg-nog and toasted both the
Old Ones and the coming holiday. Off in the distance a Deep One bayed
like one of the nameless Hounds of old -it hadn't been invited.
The woods -lovely dark and deep; were silent except for a high pitched
piping -Totoro or something far darker.
Up on the roof there arose such a clatter...
With the whine of turbines and the crunching of snow the craft set
down with a HISSSSSS of steam.
A figure emerged.
He was a big man, stocky, and dressed all in red and white with shiny
black boots. He looked at the rooftop about him listening intently - the
chanting had stopped.
He stood for a moment, hands on hips surveying the roof like it was some
private domain and then went to work.
He extracted a large bag from a stowage compartment on his craft
setting it down on the roof with a sigh. he opened the bag
it and took out it's cumbersome contents arranging them in the snow before
him. A moment after this he assembled those things which needed it and
rubbed his hands together in satisfaction. Around him sat a small maze
composed of cables and wires attaching featureless car-battery sized
boxes to readout terminals and a complex array of tubes which contained
focused crystals.
The man took the last unconnected cable in his hands looking at it with
silent reverence.... this was it then.
He took off his red fur trimmed cap and let it fall.
Then, in a quick motion, lest he change his mind jammed the cable into a
jack in the back of his neck.
He arched back and screamed - a pitiful animal sound and fell to his
knees. His eyes, wide open took on a reddish tint. He was
changing.
His suit ripped open unable to deal with the stress on it's seams. His
claw-tipped fingers exploded from his gloves and he clawed at himself
- exposing the shredding and tearing skin beneath. Soon he - or rather it
stood naked, the wet-looking artifical muscles gleaming in the
moonlight.
All around the figure the strange mechanisms came to life humming
with power and crackling with ozone.
From the tripod-monted tubes fires lept out at the heavens and
the monster, looking skyward laughed to see his handywork.
In mile-long letters bloody letters washed over the moon
"Merry Christmas from all of us at Genom"
well, what did you expect...
the header did say Ho Ho Ho
