I missed this in RAA due to me beng not up to speed. I'm bringing this
out on the list because I think it's DAMN pertinent before a great
tragedy occurrs.

I have trouble putting into words exactly how upset I am. I never
thought the point would come where Warren would push me so far that I'd
quit buying the comic. Well, he did. He can go monthly with his DP
comic like he wants to, he can publish an all-nude issue, he can do
whatever he wants. I just don't give a shit anymore. I'm through.
I mean, what possible reason could I have to buy the damn thing?
Yuri's dead! She's dead! What, am I supposed to buy the next DIRTY
PAIR series featuring Kei and The Clone and just pretend everything's
back to normal?? 'Cuz you know Warren will pretend just that.
Yuri's dead. "Yeah, but..." No buts. Yuri's dead. She was shot in
the chest. She gurgled. She coughed up blood. She died. That's it.
Period. End of story. End of the Dirty Pair. Replacing her with her
evil clone, now "cured", doesn't cut it. Yuri is not a toy. You can't
just take a new one off the shelf when the old one breaks. Making her
so easily replaceable diminishes her to the point of dehumanization.
Yes, I know. "Yuri's not real. It's just a comic book." Of course.
And Star Trek is just a TV show. And Star Wars is just a movie. It's
just a song. It's just a book. It's just a car. Basically, if I
understand the argument, I'm just supposed to buy the damn comic. I'm
not supposed to give a shit about what's in it.
Well, I'm sorry, but it doesn't work like that. Warren can't have it
both ways. Either I care about his characters or I don't. If I don't
care about his characters, I sure as hell am not going to enjoy his
comic. If I do care, then I won't appreciate a character being killed
for no good reason, especially when her death is rendered completely
meaningless by the fact that she can be replaced so quickly. A few
tears in Kei's eyes aren't enough.
Sometimes I think Warren's goal is to see how far he can push the
limits of what he does to Kei and Yuri before the readers rebel. He's
buoyed in this quest by the legions of Warren-ite cyberpunk zombies who
think everything he does is "kewl". Bigger breasts? Kewl. Marginal
incompetence? Kewl. Lots more head sockets? Kewl. Limb
regeneration? Kewl. Drug implants? Kewl. Telepathic comlinks?
Kewl. Yuri being murdered and then replaced by her own illegally
produced clone? Kewl?
I'm through. I've had it. Fuck Adam Warren. Fuck the Dirty Pair.
Fuck the whole mess. This thread will be last time you see me mention
DP on the net for a long time, probably forever. For those who have
written me saying you'd like to see more DP fanfic from me, well,
sorry, but it ain't gonna happen. My heart's not in it anymore. Try
my Oh My Goddess! fanfic or my upcoming Tenchi story. They're just as
good and there's no fucking cyberpunk in them.
I swear, I have not been this bitter about a comic since Marvel forced
Chris Claremont off the X-Men. Adam Warren has done what I long
considered to be impossible: he's alienated a six-year reader of his
comic. Congratulations, Adam. Didn't think you had it in you.

Folks, I've read a lot of steam over things, a lot of people sick of a
lot of things. And I've read the comic in question. But, *DAMMIT*,
after Ryan said this I'm ready to go find the Anarchist's Cookbook and
find Warren with a X-mas gift of my own.
I read a lot of fiction, be it anime fanfic, Superguy, LNH, r.a.prose or
whatever. But not very many are ones I come back to with very regular
frequency. I'm proud to say that Ryan's stuff is very much an exception,
be it the disturbing DP Forever, the epic of Lord Robin, or the ride of
Reunions. To me, I really can't see much, if any of Warren's
influence.... HELL, to me sometimes I wonder if Ryan's stuff should be
the canon. (Ok, that may seem much, but I digress) My point is, a rather
impassioned plea. Don't let Ryan double this tragedy. Let him realize
that though his inspiration and impetus for starting his net.fiction may
have gone gonzo, but that doesn't take away from the Kei and Yuri that
_Ryan_ not _Adam_ gave us to enjoy. Make sure he doesn't commit
another murder to equal Warren's. Maybe I'm overstepping my bounds, and
I KNOW I'll like Ryan's other fics, but I don't want to let something I
think is special die due to commercial idiocy.
