What's an 'Auton'?

The Auton was a receptical (plastic replicas of human beings) for the alien
intelligence the 'Nestene' who were naturally enough planning to take over
the world - Isn't this a compulsory full time occupation for aliens ?

If I remember correctly the hand/wrist used to hinge open to reveal a
very unfriendly gun and the facial features became like a plastic face
mask.

The Autons first apeared in "Spearhead from Space" the first colour episode
with Jon Pertwee as The Doctor in the British TV sci-fi series Dr Who.

  Terror of the Autons - 2 Jan 1971 to 23 Jan 1971

The special effects look terrible compared to today but for their time they
weren't bad (shaky sets discounted) and the stories were generally well planned.

Dr Who ran from 1963 to 1990?
I'm not certain when the final end came, as by then I'd stopped watching.

Corrections are welcome; as the last time I saw any of this was the
original air dates and my RAM chips are faulty. :)
