Excerpts from mail: 10-Nov-95 Re: Blake's 7 by Isabel Arantes@netcom.co
I've only heard of it a couple of times. What's it about?
If you've ever seen Doctor Who, you have an inkling of the special effects
quality.
Setting: a future in which Earth and several other worlds are ruled by
an overweening Federation. Blake was part of the resistance movement,
but was captured. They couldn't kill him, because he would become a
martyr and a rallying cause. So they mindwiped him, made him "confess",
("I was misguided", etc.), then mindwiped that.
The first story opens with Blake finding just a *little* of this out. As
the series progresses, he finds a ship (called the Liberator) and a crew,
and goes voyaging throughout the galaxy, fighting for freedom.
It's very well done. The plots and the acting get better and better. Avon,
the computer genius, is a very dark character that takes over the lead when
Blake disappears midway through the series. And the series went on under
the same name, doing a "Doctor Who" almost.
If you're interested, I can dub a tape of the first seven episodes,
(they're 50 minutes long each) and snailmail it to you.
It's not anime, no. But it might just as well have been, for the storyline
and the quality of the work.
