I once heard that the tradition comes from the stories of the legendary
heroes (in China, etc.). The texts were actually used as martial arts
training texts, so the names of the moves had to be announced by the
characters. Take it with a grain of salt - I can't even remember who I
heard this from, although if it was my father, he did study Chinese
classical literature.
