you that he got it up the first time he tried it.

Have you considered FreeBSD..?  Much more consistent (as well as being
based on 4.4BSD, the One True Operating System), and actually has
coordinated releases.  (Nothing really wrong with Linux, though.. don't 
get me wrong.)
