the original (from the novels) -- he's a cat (looks like a panther) like
critter with sucktion cup feelers where his ears are supposed to be.  He can
manipulate energy waves (magnetic, etc) and he has an attitude when he needs
to.  He is also the last surviving member of his race (I think). (you can
see this version in Warren's First DP series - then, never again  :(  -
Warren has declared that Mughi will not come back unit he's convinced that
he can draw him worth a damn.)

In the OVAs/etc since they didn't get the complete rights to DP from the
creator - they changed mughi into the lovable, fluffy coward we all know and
love.  (yes, the big critter that Kei and Yuri can ride around on and is
scared of a Mughi doll! - see Affair in Nolandia)

NUTS!  I forgot to say, in the OVAs - Mughi was a genetic thingamabob
created by WWWA (I think) to handle electronics and some of the flight
duties of their operatives.  I think Mughi was the only one 'made', tho.
