Although I don't find myself as "put out" by the usage as Jorge does, I
definitely agree with him in that it shouldn't be used, as it removes the
reader from the writing, is confusing, and engenders misconception.
For the record, the use of Japanese doesn't actually bother me. What I
proposed was a stylistic change --replacing one word for another I believe
more effective, as it were-- and since it's part of Lurker's writing style I
can understand the effect he's going for with this scene.
However, let's nip this one in the bud (or take it to private mail) before
we end up with an on-list debate on the use of Japanese in fanfics, OK? ;)
