I dunno. The halftone pattern Takahashi uses on Ryoga's bandanna is
definitely
checkered upon further inspection. You can even check the anime: same
thing.
Then again, Ryoga doesn't wear purple pants either. On the other hand,
manga
coloring can be relative, as seen with girl Ranma's oft-discussed colored
locks. Long story short, I believe the bandanna is checkered, not striped.
The purple pants thing is a homage to the 60s and 70s Hulk.
In the 60s and 70s the hulk was always shown wearing purple pants to
contrast with his green skin (opposites on the color wheel)
I suspect that the gamma rays actually opened a pocket universe where the
hulk stored his extra muscle and bone mass, and an infinite number of
raggedly edged purple pants.
Personally I'd really like to meet the God who created that universe...he'd
likely be lots more interesting than our own Creator.
I mean think about it... a parallel plane populated primarily by purple
pants, fortuantely fit gargantuan green goliaths.
The question is, were Bruce Banner's belatedly bifurcated britches banished
to the parallel plane populated primarily by purp-... oh, to hell with it.
