Subject: [FFML] Re: [FFML][INFO][IDEA] Azuranma Daiou, questions

are you guys going to answer my question or bicker about spelling,
i did put my list into line format so if it dosent show up that way its
your browsers fault. i came humbly looking for answers and instead i get a
few people argueing over grammar and spelling, i replied with a more solid
version of my request and if that isnt enough then ignore it.

I've seen three or four different explanations for using this kind of
writing, and I'm honestly so fed up about all of them that I'm going to
actually comment on it for once. (OK, so I've done this a couple of times in
other places, too. Wish I could find them again, but most of the old list
archives where my posts were stored went up in smoke when the lists
transitioned to Yahoo! Groups...)

Reason number one for not using your shift key: Laziness. You can't be
bothered reaching for the shift key as appropriate, and so you don't. What
this demonstrates is a failure to put any effort whatsoever into making
things readable - so why should we make an effort to read and comment on it?

Reason number two for not using your shift key: Stylistic preference. You
don't like using capital letters because you find them aesthetically
unappealing. I had a long, long, hairy argument (and I wasn't the main
argument, just a voice in the crowd really) with someone who held this view,
and in the end we determined it wasn't worth it, because said bonehead would
remain a bonehead no matter what we did. At any rate, the English language
has rules for capitalization - if you're not even trying to follow those
rules, then you're not writing in English - which means that since this is
an English language mailing list, we're not obliged to reply, are we? (Same
argument holds for l33t sp34k, too).

Reason number three for not using your shift key: You can't reach on the
keyboard for more than one key at a time. Valid reason, I suppose -
exceedingly unlikely though. And in nearly every GUI I've encountered so
far, there's the option for sticky shift keys, whereby you press the shift
key, and then the letter you need capitalized. (And in every other case,
there's the caps lock key, which works everywhere.) There are also onscreen
keyboards - the windows one *defaults* to sticky shift, alt and ctrl keys.
In short, if this is your problem, learn to use your OS's disability
facilities.

Reason number four for not using your shift key: It's broken. Even less
likely than having only one or two fingers to type with, since your keyboard
actually has two of them. Also, see the onscreen keyboard solution above.

Reason number five for not using your shift key: Dyslexia. Blame that all
you like - but get help for it. I know a ton of dyslectics - the main
difference between them and others in my experience, is that it takes them
longer to get the spelling right - but they can write coherently. And it's
not a valid explanation for lack of shift key use anyway.

I could sum all of these up as "anyone who doesn't use his shift key when
appropriate is a tard, and anyone who actually bitches when someone calls
him on it is a turd", but I'm not going to, because that would be
inflammatory and not appropriate for the list. :P

YMMV,

HTH,

Sebastian
