Quoting The Eternal Lost Lurker <lurkerdrome@sbcglobal.net>:
----------------------
Author's notes and disclaimers:
solved--with a confession--on the scene, the investigators probably
don't
bother with much beyond the formal paperwork, which may explain why
nobody
has ever noticed that Kudo Shinichi's fingerprints always turn up
where they
shouldn't, and Edogawa Conan's NEVER turn up. (Though
realistically, the
database search should kick out two matches, which would trip ANY
investigator up, because two fingerprint matches shouldn't be
possible, even
with identical fraternal twins.)
It doesn't work. What might work is saying that the software for the
police computer is set up so that it looks for a match starting with
the elimination prints taken at the scene and _stops_ when it gets a
match rather than continuing to sift through the entire fingerprinted
population of Japan. In fact doing it that way makes sense since it
would save a lot of time running prints. That means that Conan's
prints have never kicked out a "Jimmy Kudo" result because prior to
this occurance he has always been properly printed at the scene. This
would of course mean, however, that if the inspector checked previous
cases where the fingerprint technician didn't screw up, he'll quickly
determine that Conan does in fact have a scaled down version of
Jimmy's prints. But hey, he already knows that. He's just having
trouble believing it.
Of course it might be more elegant to somehow connect the Jimmy Kudo
result to the fact that the police have just opened a homicide
investigation with Kudo as the subject, since that would make the
sudden coincidence of Conan dropping cover combined with the cops
getting a clue about who Conan is a bit less unlikely. They both have
the same basic cause. But it would be a bit trickier to write since
it would mean that the software for some strange reason checked murder
victims in unrelated cases before moving on to the actual people
on the scene of the crime list. But stranger computer foulups have
happened.
