If you're running Windows, use WordPad and save your story as a .txt

Better yet, Notepad. Notepad automatically uses .txt format. It's
what I write most of my works with. I copy text to Word to do a
spellcheck, but I apply all of the corrections to the original copy
in Notepad.
Geez, you guys. If someone is used to authoring in Word, the LAST thing
they want to hear is a chorus of anti-Microsoft bigots yelling "don't use
Word" at them.
Selecting "Save As" / "Plain Text (*.txt)" and enabling the "Allow
Character Substitution" checkbox in the conversion dialog box will do all
of the desired "unformatting". Enabling the "Insert Line Breaks" checkbox
will add a hard return at the end of each individual line of text, and
selecting "Other encoding:" / "US-ASCII" will take care of any European
special characters such as vowels with umlauts/macrons/etc.
It isn't rocket science, you know.
