Subject: [FFML] [meta/query] Annual "Ameranime"/"Franime" advocacy time...

Last year, I raised a topic of non-Japanese cartoons that could be
considered close enough to anime in style and depth that they deserve
welcome on the FFML. At that time, several series were approved (see list
further below).

Now, even though very little actually came of that aside from a general
greenlight being issued for several shows by the admins, it's clear we have
a new generation of writers here lately, who might want to take advantage of
this knowledge--and more to the point, we have more series that deserve
consideration for acceptance on the FFML.

To recap, as of May last year, the FFML admins approved the following shows
as FFML-admissible source materials:

* Transformers (ANY incarnation)

* New TMNT (the 4Kids series which began in 2003)

* Teen Titans

* Xiaolin Showdown

* Samurai Jack

* Jackie Chan Adventures

* Totally Spies

In addition to resubmitting a couple shows for consideration, and
retroactively submitting a few even I had not considered the first time, I
am also submitting some brand new shows that weren't around at the time.

Keep in mind that this is primarily for the admins, and that any commentary
or discussion of this should be limited to direct e-mails to them and to
myself.

So, without further ado, this year's query list:

1. Avatar: The Last Airbender -- If you've seen this at all, then no more
need be said. If you haven't, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING NOT WATCHING IT?
Avatar is quite possibly the first American-produced
series that is virtually indistinguishable from Japanese animation.

2. Kim Possible -- The level of character depth ALONE makes this a worthy
candidate.

3. Megas XLR -- A rather obvious candidate, as it is a Kevin Smith-esque
parody of not only the mecha genre, but of many other anime and pop culture
cliches as well.

4. W.I.T.C.H. -- Rather obvious, as a halfway-decent Italian knockoff of
magical girl anime.

5. Winx Club -- Because it's only fair to include this if we include
W.I.T.C.H. :/

6. Code Lyoko -- Readvocating this one because it tries so very hard to be
anime-style...and really does succeed; I did initially mistake it for a
Japanese series until I found out it came from France. And with the second
season coming to Cartoon Network later this year, I predict a resurgence of
popularity for this title, which may lead to some good fanfiction.

7. Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi -- Okay, it's totally silly as all hell, and hardly
more than spamfic source material at best. But hey, the stars are cartoon
personifications of actual J-pop singers, so why not?

I hope I'm not the only one who feels like an annual review of new animated
series for FFML approval is a good idea. American companies are steadily
becoming more and more proficient at not just aping the visual style, but
really understanding the things that draw us to anime in the first place,
and frankly, more good new animation is coming out of the US this year than
is coming out of Japan--the 2005 spring anime season, so far, has been a
string of disappointing failures. (But that's a whole other conversation
and doesn't belong on the FFML, so I digress. ^^;;)
