David,
Thanks for your comments and for reading!
I released a long, drawn-out sigh and glanced morosely down the
street after securing the gate. When I headed down the street
toward Furenken High School, my steps were slow and measured.
Furinkan
--- I have heard both spellings and can only claim confusion.
I came upon another student, one who was peering over the fence
at the river below. Uncertain of the meaning behind the boy's
expression I said, in as cheerful a manner as my grumpy demeanor
grumpy mood
---Good point.
Seeing nothing unusual after searching the surface below, I
asked, "Water?"
"Is that what it looks like? Awful tame, I must say."
So he's never even visited before?
---Oh, yes. He should have known better. However, he suffers from
occasional foggy recollections, especially during exams, due to the
nature of his curse.
"That is the WRONG word-picture, I must say," the boy said as he
edged nervously away from the fence. "Let's move on down the
street. We are entirely too close to that river, which may look
placid but contain a hundred dryad elements of the unfriendly
persuasion."
Dryad? That would be trees. Maybe you you were thinking of "undine"
--- You are correct, Loki should have said 'undine,' or perhaps 'Nixie,'
but that is part of the story - the fact that he gets his mythology
mixed up. In the previous story, Ashes, he was a bad boy and as part of
his punishment, he has to spend some time as a real boy - a Japanese
school boy with a failing grade in "Mythology" but a very real knack for
getting into trouble. ^_^
We ambled along as I chewed on my own thoughts. I was
calculating. Thunder equals rain. Time for school means haste.
The route they were on was highly recommended for this time of
morning when there was a chance for transmorgrification
transmogrification
Actually, I took my spelling from the imminent scientist and
philosopher, Calvin, with a footnote and recommended additional
readings from his assistant, Hobbes.
"I can't do that now! I can't fix it until I return to my god
state, and I can't return to my god state until the runic panels
are restored!" He gave me a somber look. "Only you can do that.
The book will only open for one person at a time, and only that
person can control the runes, I must say.
So he talks like that guy from SCTV?
Now, THERE's a scary thought!
