So, here we are, in the seeming twilight of Ranma-dom. (It's a word!
Really!) The manga has been completely translated and posted for a
couple of years, the anime has been completely translated and is now
selling at stupidly high prices in boxed sets with fancy graphics, and
the general public STILL has /never/ heard of our favorite gender
challenged martial artist.

There is one massive difference between Ranma and Star Trek.

Ranma is a Japanese product.

Although it's been done by a very successful artist, in Japan (which is the market that counts for Takahashi), InuYasha has even more success. What's more, only old geezers (like me I guess, I've firts known of Ranma in my teens, and I'm thirty+ now) really care about it as a part of their younger days. And I'm not sure many really care for it over there, even for nostalgic qualities; there are other shows/manga who competed with it ( DBZ and St Seiya come to mind).

What as made this serie very succesfull within the fanfic world is that it's both very open to a lot of ideas, and has very (super) heroic figures. But let's get real, you've even aknowledged it. In US, it was pretty confidential, all things considered (way more than Star Trek has ever been).

So, I'm sorry, but I don't think we'll ever see the kind of revival you're talking about (if only because Takahashi who really is the only one who can continue or decide to let somebody else do so probably wouldn't be interrested in doing so).
