I want to thank all of you who have responded to this inquiry. I have now 
gathered sufficient viewpoints to determine an optimal course of action to 
take with Relatively Absent, and that is to use the external form view for 
pronouns. Since his internal acceptance/rejection of any femininity is only 
a side issue in this particular story - as opposed to being the primary 
plot as it is in After The Ball - the readership's gain of clarity far 
outweighs my own personal style preferences in this specific usage. In 
stories which the gender identity issue is paramount, I will undoubtable 
use the opposite convention.
