Lina and Gourry saw their world fade in a mix of red and white light.
Soon, the light faded and Lina looked around. She noticed that it
looked similar to her world, but somehow there were minor differences
that set her on edge.
"So, this is the world of Death Fog," Lina muttered.
Gourry looked around with shock. "Where are we?"
Slapping Gourry on the back hard, Lina said, "It would take too long to
explain. I need to borrow your sword for a second."
"You have the bow. Why do you need to borrow my sword?"
Lina put her hand on her forehead as she explained, with a resigned
sigh, "The spell I use will point to the nearest Darkstar weapon. If I
used the bow, it would stop when it points at you. If I use your sword,
while I still have the bow, it'll point to the weapon we are hunting
for. It also becomes more effective when I have more weapons on me when
I use the spell."
"Oh."
"Gourry. The sword. Now."
Gourry handed Lina the Sword of Light. As soon as she had it in her
hands, she cast her spell. She slowly turned in a circle waiting for
the sword to light up. When the sword was pointing East, the blade
appeared. Lina closed her eyes.
'It doesn't feel close, but not distant. Maybe between four days to a
week in travel time.'
Lina passed the sword back to Gourry and headed in the direction of her
compass spell. Gourry sheathed his weapon and followed Lina. The two
of them made their way through the forest. Lina cocked her head as she
listened for something.
'Where are the insects, birds, and other animals? Forests are full of
life.'
The silent forest unnerved Lina and Gourry, so they proceeded
cautiously through the woods. Deciding to not take chances, the pair
only talked in whispers. After four days of the extremely silent
journey, Lina cast her spell again. She sensed that the weapon she was
hunting for was another day's journey away and got a brief image of it.
"It's Bodigar," Lina whispered.
"Who?" Gourry whispered.
Lina kept her voice as quiet as possible. "Not who. What? It's the
Axe of Light."
"Oh."
The quickly set up camp and went to sleep. The next day, Lina looked
at the sky and figured out what else was bothering her about this world.
'I have not seen a cloud in the sky or felt even the slightest breeze.'
The duo made their way in the direction that Lina's spell had pointed.
Soon, they felt a bit relieved as they heard sounds and rushed to get a
better vantage of where the sounds were coming from. The spotted a
large city of tents and stalls surrounded by a thirty foot tall barbed
wire fence. Twelve foot tall metal golems stomped around the perimeter
of the tent city.
"What's going on?" Gourry asked.
"Just hand me the sword. I want a better destination in mind."
Lina cast the spell again and moved the sword in front of her until the
blade lit up. It was pointing at a blue stall.
"That booth is where we'll find the next weapon. We wait until night
and fly over those stupid things."
The two of them waited for the sun to set. As soon as it did, the
metal golems increased in numbers. Lina noticed that they were
constantly looking downward and towards the fence.
"Grab a hold of my leg and be quiet. Levitation."
Doing his best to keep quiet, Gourry held onto Lina's leg as she flew
them over the golem guards. She landed them near the booth she had
isolated. The two of them moved around to the front of the booth and
saw that it was a market stall. The owner of the stall was sleeping
with one arm chained to a wall. Lina saw that he could move around in
the stall and that there was a bathroom that he could reach. She put
one hand over the guys mouth and gently shook him awake. The man's eyes
widened in surprise and was about to shout, however Lina's precautions
paid off.
"I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here to buy something and maybe get
some information."
The man looked at Lina and a flash of something came to his eyes. Lina
slowly removed her hand.
"How did you get past the Robors? Where are you from?"
"I have my ways," Lina said, as she spotted Bodigar. "I'm from
Zephilia."
The store owner replied, "I have never heard of that place."
Pointing at the ornamental axe, Lina said, "I'm here to buy that."
The man's eyes widened as he looked at the girl. "Why? That thing is
worthless."
"I have my reasons. What is going on here? I have never seen a market
guarded like this before."
"You must be from some other continent. The Robors have enclosed all
cities here with fences and guard them. They don't want any chaos to
spread. It was an experiment of a scientist. He wanted to create the
perfect law officer that would maintain law and order. Those things
succeeded all too well in enforcing order. Other than human life and
plants, there are no other living creatures on this continent that I
know of. They have also enforced a strict weather control program. I
think they intend to expand to the other continents."
"That explains why everything is so silent," Lina muttered, as she
picked up Bodigar. "How much?"
"Ten vertajs."
"Huh?"
Pulling out a gold coin, Lina asked, "Will this cover it?""
Staring at the gold coin in shock, the vendor asked, "Where in the
world is Zephilia?"
Metallic reverberating voices started shouting. "Intruder alert!
Intruder alert!"
Slapping the coin down on the table, Lina hefted Bodigar. "I guess
there is no point in being quiet anymore. Gourry, while I take care of
the Robors, you free as many of the people as possible."
Gourry nodded. "Right. Be careful."
Lina stepped out in front of the Robors. It was a group of fifty led
by a larger one painted white. The white one pointed at Lina.
"Halt, intruder! State your name and place of origin."
"Lina Inverse of Zephilia."
"That city does not exist in our database, but our scans show that you
are not lying. You will surrender at once and be chained to a proper
workstation."
The gem in Lina's shoulder guard turned yellow, as she declared, "Chain
this metal heads. BLAST BOMB!!!"
A sudden explosion of fireballs melted twenty Robors into puddles of
metal.
"Illogical attack. Fire does not appear out of nowhere."
'Time to super charge,' Lina thought as she activated all her boosters.
"MEGA BRAND!!"
The sudden upheaval of ground sent another fourteen into the sky and
dropped them to the ground where the broke into piles of junk. The
white Robor looked back and forth between the two instances of
destruction.
"The world does not change when humans say words. This disorder must
be ceased by killing Lina Inverse."
"By Cephied, I thought Gaav had an attitude problem," Lina muttered.
The white one heard Lina. "Cephied? In database. The Flare Dragon.
Ruler of another world. Logical conclusion: Lina Inverse is from that
world. Logical conclusion: Disorder is running rampant in that world.
Logical conclusion: Robors must be dispatched to that world to bring
order. Change of directives: Capture Lina Inverse to acquire knowledge
of how she traveled between worlds."
Lina shook her head in disbelief. "Like I'm really going to let you
catch me. Light come forth!"
The Axe of Light lit up and caused the Robors to back up a step. Lina
snapped it up in front of her face.
"Bodigar that bashes!!"
A beam of white light blasted forth and struck the Robors. The
explosion of white light destroyed the remaining Robors. Lina let the
light dissipate and stored Bodigar in her cloak. The man she had bought
Bodigar came up to her, now that he was free.
"Miss Inverse? I'd like to ask a favor of you."
Lina shook her head. "I can only transport myself and Gourry, and I
need to save my world."
"That's not the favor I was going to ask. Up on that mountain, there
is someone who can help us break free of the Robor tyranny. Could you
go free him?"
Lina shrugged. "Well, why not? At least he should keep the bowl heads
out of my hair until my spell is complete. But first, we need some food
supplies. I wasn't taking chances on eating any fruit growing on
trees."
The mad nodded and refilled their packs with various types of food.
Lina shrugged as she saw a lot of unknown dried fruits.
"Come on Gourry. Let's liberate a liberator."
Putting their packs back on, Lina used Levitation to get her and Gourry
to the top of the mountain as fast as possible. They spotted an old man
trapped inside a cage. Lina and Gourry walked up to the cage and
startled the prisoner.
Lina said, "You don't look like much of a liberator, but I said I'd
free you."
The old man smiled and shook his head. "I doubt you can. This cage is
harder than steel and denser than lead. The Robors have made it
impossible to break."
"Gourry?"
"Right. Light come forth!"
Gourry swung the blade at the bars of the cage. Instead of cutting
through, the blade stopped as soon as it hit.
"That was a better try than most, but as you can see even something as
powerful as that has no effect."
Lina said, "Get against the far wall of your cage. I'm going to try
one more spell."
The man did as he said, while still chuckling. "I don't know what you
are planning, but I doubt it will work. Nothing of this world or any
other can break this cage."
Lina replied, "Then it'll be something of no world."
"Lord of the dreams that terrify."
"Sword of cold and darkness,
"Free yourself from the heavens' bonds."
"Become one with my body. One with my power."
"And, let us walk the path of destruction together."
"Power that can smash even the souls of the gods."
"RAGNA BLADE!!!"
The man stared in shock, as the black sword appeared in Lina's hand.
"Now THAT could do it."
Lina said nothing as she swung the blade at the cage. Unlike the Sword
of Light, the Ragna Blade blasted through the bars, freeing the old man.
Letting the spell fade, Lina said, "The people down there want to be
liberated of the Robors. But, I don't see how an old man like you can
help them."
"Oh, I intend to get rid of the Robors and then everyone else. Join
with me and we can end this world."
Lina's eyes widened in shock. "I didn't, did I?"
White mist surrounded the man, as he started growing in size. Soon the
mists completely obscured the figure, but Lina could tell it was
demonic.
Gourry was next to Lina in a second. "What's going on, Lina?"
Lina grabbed Gourry by his shirt and quickly chanted her spell.
"Since you freed me from imprisonment, I guess I can let you go on your
way. Consider it one of the two gifts from the Dark Lord Death Fog.
Now to restart my battle against the Hurricane Dragon!"
Lina's last view of the world was the Dark Lord tossing a book at
Gourry who caught it one handed. Soon blue and white energies swirled
around them. After a moment, Lina and Gourry were standing in the
middle of a swamp.
'I freed a Dark Lord to destroy a world,' Lina thought miserably.
'Luna is going to kill me.'
