Don't forget that it's illegal as all get out. As is this. Piss off the
rights holders and problems emerge. Which is not to say that this is a
desirable state of affairs, just how things are and unfortunately are
likely to remain for the foreseeable future.

I don't know of anybody in the Western fanfic community that has really
gone and done a doujinshi, but the Daigakusei no Ranma people have a ton
of fanart with a very distinctive style... Maybe with abit more "peer
pressure" they could do something like that...
Actually, there was one attempt to do doujinshi in the states that I
know of... Stephen Tsai got together with artist Jason Meador to make
doujin based on his stories Kimagure Orange College and Bishoujo Senshi
Sailor Ranma. It wasn't a success; only one issue of BSSR and three of
KOC (I think) were ever made.
Stephen, by the way, could give you a lot of reasons why doujin just
doesn't happen here. Japan has a developed market for doujin; in the
US, however, the market is largely undeveloped, and finding buyers for
them is difficult. Without buyers, it becomes a money-losing
proposition...
