Sorry if I'm spamming. I thought I'd keep this somewhat private, but I
didn't have the original writer's address anymore.

The hair is that color because the
character was designed that way. If you change the color to something
else (black), then it's not the same character.

This is exactly what irks me when it comes to anime hair in Ranma fics.

To me, female Ranma does have black hair, and so does Shampoo (unless
she has very, very dark purplish or violet hair). If Takahashi had
intended otherwise, she'd had drawn them with gray hair, as with
green-haired Lum or red-haired Akemi Roppongi. (I think the different
colours on some covers and in coloured manga pages are meant to be just
decorative.)

I've never watched the anime, so to me, a black-haired Ranma is the
Ranma I know, whereas red-haired Ranma just looks wrong.

My problem with red-haired Ranmas and, to a lesser degree, purple-haired
Shampoos is that they recall the anime designs of the characters, which
I don't care for at all, from the fair amount of pics that I've seen.
(I'm not talking just hair colour, but eyes, general facial expressions,
and so on.) Personally, I want to imagine the manga characters in the
story I'm reading. But that's just me.
On the other hand, if your fic is based solely or mostly on the Ranma
anime it seems logical to me to use the anime hair colours, if that's
how the characters look to you in your head.
Then again, a lot of writers who use manga characterization still seem
to go with physical descriptions that stem from the anime, and I don't
think it's for me to say not to do it - I just don't care for it. It
does impinge on my reading because everytime the text mentions these
colours I have to apply a sort of mental hair-dye in order to see the
persons *I* know in my head.

I realize I may well be the only person who feels like this, but I
thought I might as well state that not everyone feels the anime versions
are the right ones.

Oh, and I liked the fic, too. Though I wonder if Shampoo's Japanese is
good enough to express all that "letter law/spirit law" towards the end.
(It got a bit confusing.)

Cheers,

Elin
